About the speaker:
Helen Yaffe is a Professor of Latin American Political Economy at the University of Glasgow, specialising in Cuban development. Since 1995, she has spent time living and researching in Cuba. She is the author of Che Guevara: The Economics of Revolution (2009) and We Are Cuba! How a Revolutionary People Have Survived in a Post-Soviet World (2020). She has co-produced three documentaries, Cuba & Covid-19: Public Health, Science, and Solidarity (2020), Cuba’s Life Task: Combating Climate Change (2021), and Cuban Bees: The Organic Revolution (2023). She is also the co-host of Cuba Analysis podcast which was launched last autumn. She is often interviewed by, and contributes to, the mainstream media.
In this URPE Webinar, Helen will present research from her most recent book, We Are Cuba! How a Revolutionary People Have Survived in a Post-Soviet World (Yale University Press, 2020) as well as an assessment of the ongoing dire situation in Cuba imposed through imperialist aggression by the US and Trump administration.
