In 1989, Saul Landau wrote a piece for the Socialist Register on his time spent in Cuba with Fidel Castro.

[…] Revolutions begin as liberating acts. In January 1959 Havana rocked with a sense of free rhythm. Celebrations marked the overthrow of a nasty dictatorship and the expectations of eternal democracy and freedom, although few had any notions about what forms the new order would take.
