On the Intellectual and Archival Legacy of Piero Sraffa

Piero Sraffa was a giant of 20th century economic thought whose intellectual legacy has long been shrouded in both mystery and controversy. The implications and potential of his groundbreaking slim but terse Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities: Prelude to a Critique of Economic Theory (1960) remain to this day as equally enigmatic as the Cambridge Italian Economist himself. Join us in a talk with Professor Scott Carter of The University of Tulsa, USA, currently Visiting Scholar at Universitá degli Studi di Bergamo, Italy, in exploring new and exciting developments in positive aspects of Sraffa’s theory tailored to an undergraduate audience and interested lay people alike regarding the project to rehabilitate Classical Political Economy for the 21st century and beyond. Key to this endeavor are the thousands of pages of material from the Sraffa archive only recently made available on the web as color digital images, to which Professor Carter is devoting energies in cogently arranging so as to render them conducive for scientific study thereby allowing this mighty thinker to, for the first time in the history of economic thought, finally speak in his own voice.
